NEW DELHI (AA) – After suffering defeat in four states, the Congress party, which heads India's federal government, has registered a massive win in state election in the northeastern state of Mizoram, a 40-seat assembly where it has been in power for past three terms.

According to results of elections in five Indian states in November, the ruling Congress Party suffered defeat in four out of the five states.

It was only Mizoram state which was retained by the Congress Party.

Indian media said that the election results in five states reflected the anti-Congress sentiment due to price rises and a series of political scams rocking the nation. Journalists commented that the results did not show encouraging signs for the Congress Party ahead of the 2014 general elections.
